Katelyn’s POV
After Ethan collapsed on the sofa that evening, my first instinct was panic. For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
The day had been filled with laughter, games, and the warm glow of being a family, but in an instant, everything changed.
I knelt beside him, calling his name softly, reaching for his hand. “Ethan, can you hear me?” My voice trembled, but he opened his eyes and nodded weakly.
“It’s just my stomach,” he managed to say. “I’ve been feeling off all week.”
Relief flooded me, but it was mixed with worry. I remembered too well how Ethan always tried to brush off pain, to keep things hidden from me, as if he could shoulder every burden alone.
“Let me get you some water,” I said, forcing myself to stay calm.
In the kitchen, I poured a glass and took a deep breath. As I filled the glass, a wave of nostalgia hit me.
How many times had I done this before? How many evenings had I found myself in the kitchen, pouring water for Ethan.
