Katelyn’s POV
The next morning, the newsroom was packed and buzzing with excitement. I could hear the rapid tap of keyboards and the lively hum of voices, everyone discussing the aftermath of my headline about Xavier, the richest man.
People kept congratulating me as I walked past, some clapping me on the shoulder, others just grinning with relief. No one else knew anything about the Smith case.
That was a problem I’d have to handle quietly, on my own. For the rest of the team, it was just another day in the middle of a breaking news storm.
After a while, things finally quieted down. Most of the editors were in meetings, the energy in the office shifting from excitement to the tired relief that always follows a big story. By lunchtime, people were almost relaxed again.
It wasn’t until later that afternoon that Jamie showed up at my desk. She looked pale, her eyes red and tired. In her hands was a neatly folded letter. “I’m sorry, Katelyn. I can’t do this anymore. I have to quit.”
