By the time work ended, the office had settled back into its usual rhythm. The morning’s celebration felt far away now, like something from a different day.
I packed my things slowly, still thinking about Ethan’s reaction, and decided I wasn’t ready to go home just yet.
Rachel had texted earlier, asking if I wanted to meet at the café near her office. I said yes. It had been a while since we sat down and talked properly.
When I arrived, she was already there, sitting at a corner table by the window with a mug of coffee in her hands. She smiled as soon as she saw me and waved me over.
“You look tired,” she said as I took the seat across from her.
“It’s been a long day,” I replied, setting my bag down beside me. “But it’s nice to see you.”
We ordered drinks, I got a cappuccino, and Rachel insisted we share a slice of chocolate cake.
