Ethan’s POV
Her body shook against mine, her arms locked so tightly around me that it almost hurt. I didn’t care. The weight of her pressed into me was the only thing that proved this was real.
“Katelyn,” I whispered, almost afraid to break the moment. My voice cracked when I said her name. “Katelyn.”
She pulled back only enough to look at me. Her eyes were wet, her face thinner than I remembered, but she was alive. Then she threw herself back against me, hugging me harder.
“I thought I lost you,” I said into her hair. My throat burned with the words.
“I was gone for so long,” she murmured. “I tried to come back to you. I did.”
We stood there in the middle of the village, neither of us caring about the curious looks from passersby. I couldn’t let go, not yet.
Finally, we sat down on a wooden bench just outside a small house. A woman in a scarf waved gently before disappearing inside. Katelyn smiled faintly.
