Katelyn’s POV
Derek’s expression twisted into open disgust.
“You’ve always had your eye on that necklace,” he said coldly, “Don’t act like you didn’t want to have it for yourself. You just couldn’t stand that you're from a poor family.”
His voice grated on my nerves, the smugness in his tone sharper than a blade. I turned to face him fully, anger simmering beneath my calm exterior.
I looked him dead in the eye. “You think I care about that necklace?”
Scarlett stepped forward, her voice sweet but laced with mock generosity. “Here, Katelyn. You can have the necklace. It’s not like it means much to someone like me anyway.”
She gave a pointed smile. “Consider it a gift… since you probably won’t be getting many from your real family.”
“Fine. Since everyone says it’s mine…” I paused, letting the weight of the moment settle in the room, “…then I can do whatever I want with it.”
And with that, I turned, walked to the waste bin, and tossed it into the trash.
