Spencer said nothing. He just stared at Cressida.
"You're right. The requirement to become your daughter-in-law is pretty high," she said, rising to her feet. "But don't forget. I'm not some plaything you can summon and dismiss at will."
"Tristan will marry Kaitlyn." Spencer's voice was low and final, as he played his last card. "This was decided by our family long ago. Nothing and no one can change it. What he feels for you now is merely a passing distraction."
Cressida paused mid-step. "That's your family's affair." She left those words behind and walked out of the lounge without looking back.
Outside the private club, the sunlight was blinding. She stood on the sidewalk replaying Spencer's words. He'd called her a passing distraction, a plaything, something she'd heard before. Luther had used them to define her in the same way.
But hearing them from Spencer hurt in a way she hadn't expected. That was when she realized she'd really fallen for Tristan.
