"He's dead... he's really dead... Dan's dead!" Preston stammered.
Cassius froze, then frowned. "What do you mean? Are you telling me he died from a fall?"
Preston shook his head. "No, he was murdered. Come see for yourself!"
Cassius's heart skipped a beat as he strode over to where Dan had fallen. When he got there, he saw Dan lying in a shallow puddle that spread about three feet wide.
The most striking sight was the blood-red water around Dan's neck, which was still bleeding. Cassius' voice was tense as he said, "Someone killed him."
"His throat was slashed—he never had a chance," Preston confirmed.
When Cassius asked if anyone saw who did it, Preston shook his head. "It was chaos. One moment, he was falling; the next, he was like this."
Cassius turned to look at Matthew, who sat there watching the scene with complete calm. Cassius muttered, "This doesn't seem like his style."
