Chapter 6
Sophie's brown eyes were swollen from all the crying when I saw her. I kept my tone flat as I apologized, "I'm sorry."
She choked on a few sobs, then groused about how I didn't sound like I meant it and asked that I do more to make it up to her. However, William waved his hand and casually dismissed me. "An apology is good enough."
Sophie watched as I disappeared around the corner. She tugged on William's sleeve. "Do you have a soft spot for her, William? She's just a secretary, and you fired her! I'm all you need from now on."
He was patient enough to offer a few placating words to her at first, but when she refused to back off, he snapped. He didn't touch her for the rest of the night and instead sat on the balcony, smoking through the night.
A strange, tightening sensation filled his chest. As the first light broke, his phone buzzed twice.
