This was seriously the most awkward moment of her twenty-something years of life.
"I... I was just taking care of him," Elizabeth muttered without daring to look back. "Alexander's sick, I was just keeping him company while he rested!"
She was so flustered she didn't even bother trying to make her excuse sound logical.
Amelia tried not to laugh, smoothing out her expression with effort. She said seriously, "Lizzy, what's got you so nervous? I knocked a few times, and you two didn't respond, that's all."
Seeing her usually cool-headed daughter losing her composure like a flailing kitten was honestly quite entertaining.
Elizabeth, still caught up in her panic, actually bought it—she believed her mom hadn't caught on.
"Oh, okay..." she let out a relieved sigh.
Amelia covered her mouth, hiding her smile, then patted the leather couch beside her. "Come here, sweetie. Sit."
Elizabeth finally relaxed a bit and walked over.
"What's up?" She sat down obediently, blinking up at her mom.
