Judy was taken aback, hardly able to believe it.
Hadn't he said he wouldn't come?
"Are you okay? Let's go. Get in the car." Clark's voice brought her back to reality.
The car's warmth felt like a dream to Judy and Caleb.
"Did you come by yourself? Didn't you say you weren't coming?"
Before Clark could respond, Caleb poked his head out from beneath a soft towel.
"Mommy, don't you know? Daddy pretended not to care so the bad guy wouldn't hurt us! He was being sneaky. Right, Daddy?"
Clark glanced at Caleb, then countered, "You're certainly smart. But didn't you once say you hated me and never wanted to talk to me again?"
Caleb blinked. "Well, since you were smart enough to rescue us, I guess we'll forgive you! Right, Mommy?"
Judy furrowed her brows with mixed feelings.
Before she could speak, a deafening bang shattered the air. The car window exploded, and a shower of glass rained down.
