Upon realizing that the intruder was none other than Daniel, a mixture of relief and confusion washed over me. What was he doing here after office hours, and how had he managed to gain access to the secure building? I had always been diligent about locking doors and windows, a habit instilled in me by my parents. I always triple-checked the doors to make sure they were locked and the windows were always double-checked too, all for the sake of security.
At first, my familiarity with Daniel provided a sense of safety, but then it dawned on me that he was my ex-boyfriend—a bitter ex, to be precise. Despite being well-acquainted with his inflated ego, I had made sure to put him in his place. And I was well aware he did not like that.
