I did not wait-the moment Devon's form emerged from the darkness, I rushed forward and wrapped my arms tightly around his waist.
“What happened?”
My cheek was pressed against the warmth of his breast, and I felt the steady rhythm of his heart.
“I heard a car earlier…”
His arms closed about me and held me firmly. He rested his chin on my head, and his voice was still strained.
“They’re gone.”

I looked up. In the glow of the streetlamp his jaw was set, and the coldness in his green eyes had not yet faded.
“Catherine and Jim.” His thumb lightly stroked my back. “She was afraid I’d kill him, so she signed the divorce papers.”
“Are they eyes had not not coming back?” I searched his eyes, unable to believe that Catherine could give up so easily.
Devon took my chin in his hand, and his gaze held mine.
“No. My Beta watched them cross the pack boundary. They won’t return.”
He leaned closer, his breath warm on my lips, his tone softening with hope.
