“Ding-dong, ding-dong…”
Theron was analyzing data when the annoying doorbell cut through his focus. He frowned and snapped at the intercom, “Who is it?”
“It’s me! Open up!” came Prescott Ellington’s even more irritated reply.
Theron blinked in surprise. “Wait, when did you get back? Weren’t you off chasing down Camila Harrington? Don’t tell me she kicked you out. Yikes, that’s rough…”
Outside the door, Prescott’s face darkened. His grip on the intercom tightened till it creaked. “Theron, keep talking and you can kiss next month’s funding goodbye.”
Theron shut up instantly. That threat hit where it hurt most. He hurried over to open the door for his best source of funding.
The moment the door swung open, he froze. Prescott was holding a toddler in his arms. For someone whose face rarely showed emotion, Theron’s eye twitched as he pointed at the child. “Don’t tell me... this little one’s yours?”
Prescott’s stormy face eased a little. “Yeah, my daughter. Her name’s Lottie. She’s two.”
