Marcus had just finished taking Elaine's temperature and was recording it on her medical chart when her words made him pause, his pen hovering over the clipboard. He had been working at this hospital for many years. Countless patients and doctors called him "Dr. Middleton", including many people he didn't even recognize. But there was something different about the way Elaine addressed him. It seemed to carry more than just a casual greeting, more like the tone used between people who knew each other.
