Chapter 15

Gabriel didn't come home that night. He called and said he had things to handle at the military academy. Hannah and Jamie slept in the same bed, clutching each other's hands as tears started to fall. "I miss Mom. She never hit me or yelled at me. Linda's nothing like her," Jamie mumbled, rubbing his sore ear which was still red from earlier. "Let's go find Mom. I know she'll come back for us. I don't want Linda anymore," Hannah said, blowing gently on Jamie's ear to comfort him. Jamie nodded. "Yeah, let's do it. We'll go tomorrow!" With that, the two of them drifted off to sleep. The next morning, Jamie and Hannah got up early, put on their backpacks, and tried to sneak out quietly. Linda heard the noise and said from her room, "Could you be quiet? I'm still trying to sleep."
