"You showing up like a ghost in the middle of the night?" Beckett joked.
"I just…" Julian twisted his fingers, voice low and raspy. "I wanted to talk to Maddy."
Beckett glanced at Madeleine. "You wanna talk to him?"
Madeleine instinctively hugged Beckett tighter and shook her head.
Even knowing Julian was all bark and no bite, the things he'd said before had scarred her. She wasn't ready.
"If you're not willing to forgive me… I'll just wait downstairs, however long it takes… until you do…" Julian mumbled. He didn't have any of that usual tough-guy vibe now.
Beckett raised his brows at him. Was this an apology, or low-key emotional blackmail?
Madeleine buried her face into Beckett's neck, clearly refusing to have a one-on-one with Julian.
