It must've hurt like hell—Beckett was half out of it, murmuring her name over and over.
When Miles walked into the ER, the bedsheets under Beckett were soaked through with blood.
The guy was curled up on the bed, clutching the sheets like his life depended on it.
"Come on, Beckett, she's waiting for you. Waiting for you to go to check-ups with her, to spend every damn New Year together..."
"You've got to pull through."
"She's waiting…" Beckett's voice was so faint it was barely there.
But he knew. He knew Maddy was out there, waiting for him.
He couldn't give up now.

Maddy cracked her eyes open at dawn, still lying on the office couch after a quick nap.
There was still a mountain of crap to deal with at work. The more they wanted her to fall apart, the more she was going to hold it together.
She had to clean up the mess before Beckett got back. For him, for the company.
