When she heard Ethan's call, Wendy opened the door and stepped in. Her voice was gentle as she asked, "You're up? It's Saturday. You can sleep in today."
"I don't want to sleep in," he said through sniffles, reaching out his arms toward her. "I want to stay with you. Please don't go."
Wendy scooped him into her arms. "I'm right here, Ethan. Don't be scared. Mommy's not going to leave you."
Half an hour later, Ethan had finally stopped crying. Still holding her tightly, he asked, "Mommy, are we going home today?"
"We're not going back," Wendy said firmly. "If you're awake, let's have breakfast. Then how about a trip to the amusement park?"
Ethan's eyes lit up for a moment, but they dimmed just as quickly.
He looked down, not meeting her eyes."Is Daddy going with us?"
His face was still tear-streaked from earlier, and his eyes and nose were flushed from crying. His voice trembled as he asked that question.
