Jenna grabbed onto James' sleeve, looking so pitiful it seemed like she was about to cry.
James' frown deepened.
After a moment of silence, he pushed Jenna's hand away. Then, without another word, he drove away from the police station.
Mary ran after them, shouting, "Jenna! James! Don't leave! What about me?"
Jenna and Mary had come in a police car. How was she supposed to get back now that they had left?
Luckily, Brody had been watching the situation the whole time. He quickly caught Mary when she almost stumbled.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
Mary turned to him angrily. "It's all your fault! If it weren't for you people, would my daughter have to suffer so much?"
Thinking she was talking about Wendy, Brody lowered his gaze. "I'm sorry, but Ms. Sanders—"
Mary cut him off. "What's the point in apologizing? You just take Wendy's word for everything. Aren't you the police? Why didn't you investigate properly before dragging us off? I'm going to file a complaint!"
