Calvin pointed to the bed, which resembled an operating table.
Shirley frowned slightly but walked over and lay down.
Calvin put on gloves and approached with a flashlight. "Open your mouth."
Shirley paused, then silently complied.
After a moment, Calvin discarded a cotton swab and muttered, "Your throat's a bit inflamed. Keep this in your mouth." He handed her a thermometer.
He asked, "How many days have you had a fever? What were your initial symptoms? And what's the color of your urine?"
Shirley, holding the thermometer in her mouth, felt a wave of irritation and frustration.
If it weren't for this man's serious and stern demeanor, she would seriously suspect he was doing this on purpose.
Calvin continued to press, "I'm talking to you."
When she didn't answer, Calvin pulled the thermometer from her mouth with a swift motion.
Shirley locked eyes with him. "I've had a fever for three days, no cough or runny nose, just full-body aches and weakness."
