Shirley's soft, delicate skin made the bruise on her knee stand out, making it hard not to feel sorry for her. She lowered the hem of her dress and said flatly, "Just a fall. I'm fine."
Her indifference irritated Benjamin. "Rachel said you were frightened," he said. "But you look fine to me."
Shirley's gaze shifted to Benjamin's face. She stared at him intently, as if searching for any sign of evasiveness. "You really don't know what's in the dungeon?" she asked.
Benjamin met her gaze, his expression cool. "What's in there?"
Shirley tried to find a trace of guilt on his face, but she failed. Either he was really good at hiding it, or he simply had no reason to.
A wry smile touched her lips. "Right. You've never been locked inside, so how could you possibly know?"
Benjamin didn't get angry at her sarcastic tone. Instead, he asked, "Then tell me, what did you see in the dungeon?"
Benjamin's question made Shirley's mind race, the image of the bloodied face flashing before her eye
