Leona immediately countered Shirley with a question, "Hearing you say that, does that mean Benjamin is just as hard to approach at home?"
Shirley nodded. "He is quite difficult. As Benjamin's friend, I'm sure you're well aware of that, aren't you?"
"Benjamin's friend." The one sentence dismissed any ambiguous connection between Leona and Benjamin.
Leona smiled without answering, and Shirley continued, "But the longer two people are together, the more they find ways to connect. Don't you agree, Ms. Faith?"
Leona smiled lightly. "Matters of the heart are hard to predict. Some grow closer the longer they are together, while others grow more distant. Divorce rates are high these days, and who knows what tomorrow may bring?"
If Leona's earlier comments were unintentional, these words were outright provocation.
Marie sensed the tension between the two and refrained from getting involved.
She remained silent, and so did Janine. She trusted Shirley's ability to handle the situation.
