Jeffrey firmly refused. "You should focus on your studies right now. Don't overwork yourself and ruin your health. I can still manage. I'll figure out the money issue." Joanne, understanding the situation, chimed in, "Jack, don't worry about me. I'll stop buying snacks and use my school supplies more sparingly." But Jack shook his head resolutely. "My part-time job is very easy and related to my major. It won't wear me out." He didn't dare tell his family how much he had saved, fearing they would worry he was involved in something illegal. Jeffrey wanted to persuade him further, but seeing Jack's determination, he reluctantly agreed. In his heart, however, he felt even more gratified by Jack's maturity and thoughtfulness. During the New Year holidays, following Perthter traditions, people enjoyed a relaxed day in their homes. Early in the morning, Jack's phone began ringing non-stop as New Year's greetings from high school and university classmates flooded in. Though most message
