The answer left Enola's lips so effortlessly that, for a fleeting moment, Robert found himself wondering—why not?
If she was willing, he could marry her. If she wanted to, he could take her anywhere she wanted to go.
But as he came back to his senses and met Enola's eyes—eyes that seemed to see through everything—he suddenly fell silent.
Anyone else could say those words. Anyone but him. That was because he was the one who let her go first. He was the one who gave her up.
A tap on the glass interrupted them. Enola turned toward the sound and saw Parker standing outside, motioning toward his phone. She glanced down and saw a new message on her screen.
"There's not much time before our flight. Are you two planning to keep talking? If so, I'll go ahead and reschedule."
Enola couldn't help but chuckle, immediately recognizing his deliberate attempt to interrupt them. But she didn't mind these little power plays. In fact, she found them amusing.
