Melody's body was sore. Jeremy had worn her out.
She glanced at him, lifted the quilt, and started to get up.
Jeremy spoke again. "Are you and Jason very close?"
He wasn't familiar with her friends, yet he remembered the name.
Melody didn't know why he brought up Jason, but she nodded. "We're good friends."
When she was little and frail at the orphanage, other kids stole her food. Jason always got it back for her, and they had stayed close ever since.
Jeremy's dark eyes were unreadable. "Keep your distance. He might carry germs."
Melody retorted, "He works in auto repair, but he's very clean. Don't talk about him like that."
Jeremy's face stayed impassive. Remembering Jason's grease-stained shirt, he said evenly, "He looked dirty."
Melody's frown deepened. She disliked him talking that way. As such, she insisted, "Not every job is glamorous. He earns an honest living. Saying that makes you sound mean."
She whispered the last word, yet Jeremy caught it.
