Joseph remained unyielding. He said, "You had options back when you were adopted, Irene. You're the one who chose the Walker family. I know you did thorough research at the time—you thought the Walkers were better and wealthier.
"Countless times after that, when they tried to terminate the adoption, all you had to do was agree, and you would've been free. You could've found a new adoptive family. You're the one who couldn't let go."
Irene finally burned through her anger. She thought she would at least see a flicker of sympathy in Joseph's eyes, but all that rose was impatience.
