Chapter 274 Then I Have Nothing To Say
Sophia wanted to agree at first, but the words circled around her tongue and took on another form. "I have been avoiding the Jones from the moment I was released from prison, but Leah William and Madam Jones just won’t stop approaching me. This is beyond my control."
Silence.
The already tense atmosphere felt immensely stifling because of the silence.
"Are you saying that because you want me to stand up for you?" Master Harris narrowed his eyes at her, raising his voice.
"You got the wrong idea." Sophia's palms were soaked with sweat. "I was just telling the truth."
Master Harris sneered.
"I'm just saying this as a precaution." Sophia licked her dry lips. Her back was soaked through. "Leah has gone all out even to the extent of risking her life to frame me in order to stop me from getting engaged to Charles."
"If she knows that I am pregnant with the Harris family's child, I have no idea what sort of frenzied things she will do. I’m telling you this to avoid the consequences of your wrath in the event of an accidental miscarriage."
Master Harris did not say anything and merely measured her with razor-sharp eyes.
Charles frowned imperceptibly. He made several attempts to speak but ended up saying nothing at all after glancing at Master Harris’ countenance.
Under Master Harris’s scrutinizing gaze, Sophia felt as though thousands of catties of weights were bearing down on her that she could not even lift her head up. The sweat on her forehead seeped out of her forehead in layers.
"Don't worry." Master Harris broke the silence and said with a dark look on his face, "They won’t have the guts to do that!"
The huge rock that spanned across Sophia's heart dropped abruptly, feeling like she had been fished out of the water. "Thank you."
Master Harris harrumphed heavily, saying pointedly, "You better give birth to a great-grandson when the time comes, not some sort of miscarriage or an overdue!"
"You have personally sent someone to examine me. If you still don't believe that I'm pregnant, then I have nothing to say." Sophia dropped her head, her pupils contracted, the cold sweat that had just dissipated on her forehead started seeping out again.
Master Harris was immensely dissatisfied with her attitude and stared at her sullenly for a long time, grabbing the teapot with boiling hot water in it.
"Go ahead and smash it if you don’t want your great-grandson anymore." Charles looked at him, gently tapping his finger on the table twice.
Sophia raised her head slightly and saw Master Harris' wrinkly and crumpled hand fastened around the handle of the teapot, whereas the teapot had been lifted one centimeter away from the tabletop. She grabbed her clothes abruptly, subconsciously wanting to stand up and dodge, but her physical impulses were suppressed by her rationality.
Master Harris was a typical dominant personality type person with a strong desire to be in control and did not like anyone doing things that were beyond his control.
"You should really thank this child!" Master Harris slammed the teapot on the table and glowered at the two of them who were seated on the couch in front of him.
Sophia was clasping her clothes slightly softer now but did not loosen her grip completely. Her nerves were still taut.
"A pregnant woman's emotions can affect the fetus." Charles took in her minor movements and pursed his lips, saying, "Besides, Sophia has spent two years in prison, so her body isn’t in good shape. If you want to hold your great-grandson safely, Grandpa, then please take care of her emotional well-being."
Master Harris slammed the table, stood up, and roared, "Do you really think that only the child in Sophia’s belly can be my great-grandson?!"
"You have so many grandchildren, naturally, the one in Sophia’s belly won’t be your one and only great-grandson." Charles smiled coolly. "But you are running out of time. This may be the only one you will ever hold in your life."
Sophia’s heart fell with a thump when she heard what he said. A cold sweat broke out on her forehead, back, and palms instantly.
For a person of high authority like Master Harris, death was a taboo topic. What was more, it was a fact that he did not have much time left to live!
Sure enough—
"What did you say?" Master Harris glared at him as he gasped for air.
Charles dropped his head without a word.
"Get on your knees!" Master Harris covered his mouth with his hand and coughed violently, his wrinkly face turned pale in an instant.
He had covered his mouth very firmly, but Sophia risked a peek and spotted blood leaking through his fingers.
Not much, but it was a sign of death.
Master Harris was indeed running out of time.
Charles did not talk back this time and knelt to the ground with his head lowered.
"Ken, slap him!" Master Harris roared with a grim look on his face. “Don’t stop until I tell you to stop! Did you hear… cough… me?!"
Baldy grunted in response and walked toward Charles. "I’m sorry, Mr. Harris…"
Having said that, he slapped his face without mercy.
All of a sudden, sounds of slaps across the face were the only sounds reverberating around the huge living room, it sounded exceedingly loud and clear.
Master Harris watched for a while, then sat on the couch with a sullen look on his face, and continued watching as Charles was being smacked across the face.
Sophia saw Charles' face swell up instantly with blood oozing out the corner of his mouth. She clasped the hem of her clothes, her lips were slightly open, the fear and panic in her eyes could not be concealed no matter how hard she tried.
This was the twenty-first century, an era of democracy and the rule of law, but violent dictatorships like Master Harris still existed!
Marie was right, she was really innocent indeed, no, innocent might not be the right word—foolish would probably be the right way to put it!
She grew up in this circle, but it was not until today that she learned about this bloody world where the weak would always be prey to the strong! With no capability and no backer, a person would only be a nobody that anyone could just push around!
Sophia stared at Charles with unblinking eyes. After what felt like a very long time, she finally heard Master Harris asking Baldy to stop.
"Don't start thinking that you can do all sorts of foolish things just because your aunts and the rest support you for the presidency." Master Harris walked up to Charles and said in a cold voice, "Even after I die, you still won’t beat me with all your shallow acts!"
Charles maintained the kneeling posture with some difficulty, then wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth with a mild look on his face, acting as though he was not the one who was slapped earlier.
Master Harris harrumphed heavily at him, then called out to Ken and left together.
"Sit here and wait for me." Sophia helped him to the couch and trotted upstairs. When she was nearly upstairs, she staggered and almost fell downstairs. Even so, she did not stop and continued to run upstairs.
Charles stared at her departing back and the corner of his mouth tugged into a tiny arc. This movement, however, caused him to wince in pain.
After a while, Sophia came downstairs with the first aid kit in her hands and treated his wound whilst furrowing her brows.
Meanwhile, Charles was staring at her with unblinking eyes. His gaze moved along her eyes to her lips to her elegant neck, then moved along her neck to her lips to her eyes, repeating the same pattern over and over again.
"Have you seen enough?" His gaze was seemingly tangible. Its sense of existence was so intense that Sophia could not even ignore it even if she tried.
