Chapter 283 You Don’t Have To Do That On Purpose

In the ward. After Madam and Dr. Hemingway walked out, Charles lifted the blanket, told Sophia to lie on her stomach, and massaged her waist. Thinking how uncomfortable it felt to stay in a posture lying on her stomach like that, Sophia wanted to refuse but ultimately, still could not change his mind. "You don’t have to do that on purpose." Sophia put her hands on the pillow, resting her chin on her hands. "Dr. Hemingway isn’t interested in me." Charles massaged her waist for a while, then moved to her right leg. "Do what on purpose?” "...You know what," Sophia replied with a frown. Charles grabbed her waist with both hands and turned her over, looking straight at her. "I don't know, why don't you tell me?" He put his hands on her side and was very close to her, looking as though he would kiss her the next second. "..." Sophia felt uncomfortable when they looked at each other like that. She tried to roll over and move further away from him, but was only halfway through when Charles grabbed her by the waist and stopped her. Charles dragged her back to the center of the bed and stood up straight. "You think you’re at home? Keep going and you’ll roll off the bed." Sophia turned her head to look at the side of the bed, there was a look of unease on her face. She forgot that the bed was very small. "How did you come up with this idea today?" Charles sat on the chair, removing the water bag and water pipe so that Master Harris or anyone else would not find out about it when they came in. Sophia said mildly, "What else did you think I would do? Confront Leah like I used to?" Charles made no comments. "It’s just a spur-of-the-moment thing." Sophia did not explain too much either. In fact, she has been thinking about it the whole time. Leah was a shameless and scheming b*tch. If she confronted Leah head-on, not only would she allow the latter the get off scot-free, but she would also give Leah a chance to play the victim. When she heard that Leah had come over to apologize to her today, her first thought was: Leah would probably use self-injury to trick her by pretending to pass out and whatnot to win public sympathy. Humans are strange species. When things happened, they would always sympathize with the weak subconsciously. Sophia did not want to give Leah a chance to gain sympathy, so she suddenly thought of a way to use the method that Leah would use to gross her out to do the same to her. Charles did not ask any more questions, though his brows furrowed almost imperceptibly when he noticed her reluctance to talk to him. Sophia wanted to use this opportunity to return to the White residence yet was worried that her parents were unaware of her ‘illness’, hence she wanted to inform Sterling and Nicole so that they could pass on the news to her parents. Just as she was about to send a message, she realized that she did not bring her mobile phone along. "Did you bring your phone when you came out?" Sophia asked. "No." The temperature in the ward was very high, so Charles took off his suit jacket and hung it on a clothes hanger next to him. “Are you trying to find out if Leah has managed to whitewash this incident by passing out this time? Or are you trying to inform Sterling and Nicole that you’re in the hospital?" Sophia's pupils dilated a little. For a moment, she did not answer him. This was not the first time Charles had guessed her intentions correctly. Even so, she would still feel an unspeakable sense of fear every time he managed to guess her thoughts. He had supernatural perception yet still had no choice but to contend with people like Leah, Master Harris, and the rest. If that was the case, those people… At the thought of how she would end up contending with these people like Charles, she could feel a chill racing down her spine. "Leah won't be able to whitewash the incident this time." Charles said, "You have both ‘passed out’ together, so she won’t get anything out of playing the victim this time." "She’s in an unfavorable position right now. Master Lewis and the rest have already attempted to whitewash the incident yesterday. If she tries to whitewash it again, it will only disgust the public. The gains do not make up for the losses. This will not do the Jones Group any good." He poured a glass of water and handed it to her. "What do you think she will do now?" Sophia thought for a while and said based on previous speculations, "Leah is holding the last card. She won’t play that card unless she knows for sure that she will be able to whitewash this incident." Leah admired Charles but she had never told her that. When Leah confessed to her about it, she had already set out the traps for her. One trap after another, she simply had no chance of escaping. Leah would not do anything unless she was really sure of it. "Mm." Charles did not proceed with the topic. "You don't need to text Sterling and Nicole. Your parents will be here. Don't agree to go home with them first. Wait until they come a few more times and promise you several conditions, that’s when you can finally say yes.” Sophia responded with mixed emotions. She had only figured out the beginning but Charles had already guessed her thoughts and even the things that she needed to do afterward. Leah, on the other hand, was equipped with a similar mind. The gap between them was too huge. "Don't think too much." Charles pinched her chin and gave her a quick peck on the lips. "You are not as silly as you think, your dad has just deliberately raised you up into thinking this way since childhood." Logically speaking, they had been in much closer contact, hence a kiss was not too big of a deal. However, Sophia was still not used to this kind of intimacy, it seemed… it seemed as though they were deeply in love, though the truth was far from different. She subconsciously wanted to smack his hand away, but he seemed to have expected it as he let go of her chin before she could do anything and stepped back to a decent distance. The touch on her lips lingered and Sophia reached out to wipe it, trying to wipe off the feeling that was making her uncomfortable. After a few rubs, however, the touch on her lips felt even more distinct now. She put down her hand restlessly, a trace of dejection in her voice. "...How did you know what I was thinking about?" "Maybe we have a telepathic connection because I like you too much?" Charles picked up her small movements and expression changes, the corners of his lips twitched in a faintly discernible manner. Sophia pursed her lips and made no reply. "When you say yes to your parents, don't forget to tell them that I will be staying there too," Charles said. Sophia raised her head abruptly. "You... are going there too?" "Or do you want to sneak back here every night and sleep with me?" Charles’ gaze lingered around her several times and eventually came to a stop on her lower abdomen, his eyebrows stained with an exceedingly faint trace of teasing. Sophia lowered her head and drank a few sips of water. "I will inform my parents when they come." Charles was right. Roughly three hours after they arrived at the hospital, Jenny and James started hurrying over. "Soph, why are you ill again? Did you catch a cold or did someone upset you?" Jenny placed a pile of things she carried in her hands on the table and trotted to the side of the bed with a worried look on her face, grabbing onto Sophia's hand and looked her up and down. "It’s your pulmonary edema again? When you entered the operating theatre twice last time, didn't the doctor say that you’ve recovered after the operation? Did they prescribe you any medicine afterward? Are those medicines ineffective? Do you feel better now? What did the doctor say?" She asked seven questions in a row without even stopping to catch her breath. Halfway through, her tears even started flowing out. Before Sophia could answer, James said gently, "You asked so many questions at once, how is Sophia supposed to know which one to answer?"
