I stepped back from Lucian like the air he breathed burned me.
“I should leave.” I said, my voice steadier than my chest felt.
He moved instinctively, like he always did, like he still believed he had the right to touch me. “Elora…”
I turned before he could finish. Because If I stayed one second longer, I'd do something I wouldn't be able to take back. I walked out of the room, my steps quick, my heart pounding so loud it drowned out every thought.
In the living room, I stopped, looking back at Brandon.
Brandon was still there, on his knees, bruised, broken, and kept avoiding my eyes.
For a second the guilt clawed at my chest. Then I remembered the gun pressed to the back of my head, the mask he had on, the fear I felt, then I swallowed hard and kept walking, ignoring Lucian calling my name behind me.
The moment I stepped out of Lucian’s apartment, cold air hit my face, and then I looked to my apartment and saw him pacing back and forth at my entrance.
