Thinking of that, Gerry Hawthorne suddenly grinned and was about to give his grandson a solid pat on the arm, but Edward, like he saw it coming a mile away, stepped back just in time so his grandpa’s hand hit nothing but air.
Edward shot him a blank look. “Just talk. No need for the theatrics.”
Gerry awkwardly withdrew his hand, muttering under his breath, “Didn’t even use any real strength, what’s there to dodge?”
Edward couldn’t be bothered replying. He walked him to the hospital entrance, waited until the car pulled away, then turned and headed back to the room.
After Gerry’s visit, Alice stayed in the hospital for another two days. Twice a day, like clockwork, Mr. Thornton brought over some nourishing broth. Rain or shine, he showed up on time with that thermos.
Alice glanced at her already bulging stomach, then at the half-full bowl of soup in front of her, and looked helplessly at Mr. Thornton.
Help. She seriously couldn’t drink another drop.
