The scream hadn’t faded before we were moving.
Kaelos and Callista flanked me as we ran toward the cliffs, our boots kicking up sand in the moonlight. The air felt colder than before, laced with something darker than wind. We crested the ridge just in time to hear another cry—closer, shriller, ending in a gutting silence.
“North edge,” Callista barked, already ahead.
We found the body slumped at the base of a stone pillar. One of our scouts. His throat was marked with deep gashes, claw-like, but not from any wolf I knew. The blood hadn’t dried. Whatever attacked him was close.
Kaelos knelt beside the body, frowning. “These marks… they’re not just physical. There’s magic in them. Cursed magic.”
Callista’s eyes narrowed. “They’ve already touched the Codex.”
I felt it then too. A hum in the back of my skull. Like a voice I couldn’t hear but could still feel. Whispering. Tempting.
