CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED: THE BIRTH
One afternoon, as Claire napped on the couch, Mason busied himself around the house, triple-checking their hospital bags and installing yet another baby-proofing device.
The sound of the doorbell jolted Claire awake. She struggled to sit up, her swollen belly making every movement a challenge.
"I've got it!" Mason called, rushing to the door. He returned a moment later, followed by Evelyn and Daniela, each carrying what looked like enough food to feed an army.
"We thought you could use some home-cooked meals," Evelyn explained, heading for the kitchen.
"And some company," Daniela added, settling herself next to Claire. "How are you feeling, darling?"
Claire forced a smile, even as she felt her patience wearing thin. "I'm fine, just tired. You really didn't need to go to all this trouble."
For the next few hours, Claire endured a barrage of advice, stories, and well-meaning but intrusive questions. By the time Evelyn and Daniela finally left, she felt completely drained.
