That afternoon, Maria Lewis was on the phone with James Bennett, talking about Amelia White. She sounded a bit worried. “You posted something that intense—aren’t you afraid of pissing off the White family?”
“It was bound to happen sooner or later,” James said calmly. “No use dodging it.”
“But you know your family and theirs go way back. Isn’t that... a bit messy?”
“Doesn’t matter. The Bennetts have ties with more than just their family. The Johnsons and Lees, for example—aren’t they just as close?”
Maria paused, thinking it over. He had a point. If things blew up, so be it. It wouldn't shake the Bennetts anyway.
“When do you have time? Grandpa and Grandma miss Ella,” James asked.
“Maybe in a few days. Things just happened, and we shouldn’t meet yet. If the media catches wind of this, it could ruin everything.”
“Alright. I’ll let them know.”
Just then, she heard the door open and Ella shouting “Uncle!” from the living room.
