#Chapter 9: Scared
Mia POV
Heat flooded my cheeks, a traitorous blush creeping up my neck. The playful banter had taken an unexpected turn, a sensual electricity crackling between us. Albert's voice, a low murmur between us, sent shivers down my spine. His hand, warm and surprisingly gentle, brushed a stray strand of hair from my face.
I swore his breathing picked up, too.
Just as I felt myself leaning in, drawn by the unexpected intensity of the moment, my phone pierced the charged atmosphere with a shrill ring.
I pulled back, realizing what I was doing. He literally hired me only for his green card, and we lived in totally different worlds. I had struggled with my debts for years, while he was clearly used to all kinds of extravagance.
"Excuse me," I mumbled, snatching the phone out of my pocket. A quick glance at the screen revealed Katie's name. Relief washed over me, a welcome distraction.
"Hey, Katie!" I answered, stepping away from Albert with a forced smile.
