Heidi told Matthew and Rachel about her plans.
"Take care, then." Matthew didn't stop her. "Call me if something comes up."
Half an hour later, Heidi went downstairs with her suitcase.
It was snowing heavily in Ashford.
Nelson was wearing sunglasses paired with a flashy leopard-print coat as he leaned against the car door. The people passing by couldn't help but stare at him.
Nelson paid them no mind. When he spotted Heidi, he took off his sunglasses and ran over to her, wrapping her in a bear hug. Heidi almost couldn't breathe.
"My goodness, you've lost so much weight! It hasn't even been that long since we last met!" Nelson pinched Heidi's thin cheeks. He looked upset, and he could barely hide the heartache in his gaze.
"Cut it out." Heidi slapped his hand away. Then, she tossed her suitcase into the trunk. "Come on, let's go. If my dad sees you dressed up like this, he'll nag at you again."
As Nelson drove, he studied Heidi through the rearview mirror.
