Avery slipped her arm through mine and gave it a light, playful shake. “Dad, how about I buy you a whole box to make up for it?”
I looked at her, a trace of irritation still lingering from seeing the pastries in the trash. It had bothered me more than I cared to admit. But as I met her eyes, that feeling slowly faded.
How could I really get angry with her over something so small?
Instead of saying anything harsh, I reached out and flicked her lightly on the nose.
“You’re getting married soon, and you’re still this mischievous,” I said, my tone calm but laced with quiet admonishment. “You’ll have to learn to behave yourself once you’re living with your husband.”
She wrinkled her nose slightly, though the corners of her lips lifted into a faint smile.
“David doesn’t mind,” she said, before leaning her head against my shoulder. “Dad, I really don’t want to leave you.”
Her voice softened at the end, losing the playful edge it had just moments ago.
