Kieran eased a hip on the arm of the sofa, shrugged. ‘It’s being discussed.’
‘But you can’t leave the company.’ I held the glass with both hands.
‘That’s not up to me, honey. Nana has issued the marching orders. Even my dad can’t go up against her.’ He grinned. ‘By the way, we made the headlines of Lisbern Daily’s society pages, darling.’
‘Shit. Is that why she upped the pressure on you?’
‘I won’t lie to you, it’s a contributing factor. But.’ Kieran slid down onto the sofa next to me. ‘It was going to happen sooner or later. Nana’s ultimatum is, I either return to the family with divorce papers, signed and notarised, or I don’t return at all.’
I had no idea what to say.
Things were getting out of hand.
‘Hey, don’t worry about it.’ Kieran squeezed my shoulder. ‘And don’t beat yourself up over this. I’ve made my choice, and I can live with it.’
Maybe he could.
But I couldn’t.
What kind of wife would I be if I knew staying with me meant Kieran would be disowned by his family?
