‘Nah.’ Eimile downed the glass of cocktail in one long gulp. ‘I’ve got things to do. Don’t worry about me. I can handle myself.’
‘Be that as it may, I still want you to come stay with us,’ Kieran insisted. ‘At least for a day or two. We’ll take you out to dinner.’
Eimile smiled. ‘Thanks, but no thanks.’
She shot to her feet, leaned over, planted a kiss on his cheek. ‘Bye.’
She patted my shoulder. ‘Take care.’
Then she turned around and was gone like the wind.
‘She’s quite a…free spirit.’ I stared after her.
‘More like a lone wolf.’ Kieran blew out air through his mouth. ‘I’ve been trying to take her in ever since her brother passed away. She was just a teenager back then. But she always said no. Never asked me for anything. Never wanted anybody’s help.’
I filled him in on what Eimile told me.
‘She took my place. If Erin hadn’t put me in the wrong room, I’d have been the one Conor jumped.’
And I sure as hell wouldn’t have gotten over it as easily as Eimile did.
