"Bzzz."
Her phone vibrated like crazy inside her bag. Anna scrambled to fish it out, no surprise—it was from Lucy.
"Hi, Mom," she answered in an overly sweet voice, sugar spilling out of every syllable.
But Lucy wasn't having any of it. She went straight in, no mercy: "Anna, did you leave yet? Don't tell me you're not there!"
"I—of course I left! I can literally see DeSunte right now."
At that, Lucy's tone eased a bit. "Good. Head straight to table twenty-one. Oh, and I told you to dress nicely today. Did you?"
Anna glanced down at her outfit.

With her weird surge of confidence bubbling up, Anna gave a small smug grin and said proudly, "Mom, relax. I won't embarrass you."

"Mom, why are you so on edge anyway? It's not like you ever care how I dress."
