Early in the morning, little Grape was already awake, her soft, tiny body darting around the living room. Reuben watched her with a delighted grin. In her current state of innocence, she seemed to remember nothing, her attention entirely captured by the little girl.
It was, in a way, a relief.
Callie leaned against the doorway, observing the scene for a while. Nelson walked up beside her and said, “Every cloud has a silver lining.”
His daughter, in her own way, had brought healing to a father who had carried guilt for years. It was a form of compensation, however unexpected.
Callie felt a warmth in her heart, though it was hard to describe exactly what she was feeling.
“Daddy! Mommy!”
Grape spotted Callie’s figure and ran toward her. Callie’s expression shifted, but Nelson was quick to step in, scooping Grape into his arms.
“Smell that? There’s alcohol. Mommy’s been drinking. Go play with Grandpa and Auntie for now.”
