Callie slowly shook her head, her gaze fixed on Nelson. “Take him away. There’s no bond between us to speak of, no foundation for such selflessness.”
It wasn’t that Ahmad refused to accept her; it was that she could never accept him.
Nelson, supporting Ahmad with one hand, had maintained his composure earlier, but now he was visibly shaken, teetering on the edge of despair. He asked Jaquan directly, “What do you want?”
“Let me leave the country.”
“When will you release Callie?”
“The moment I’m across the border, I’ll let her go.”
Nelson’s intense gaze flicked to Callie, his indecision evident.
Jaquan, relaxed and confident in his advantage, smirked. “I’ve already submitted a request to Owen. It’s possible this ship will blow up in a while. If we all die together, it’s no loss to me.”
Nelson’s brow furrowed deeper, but Ahmad spoke first. “I’ll send people with you to ensure Callie’s safety.”
