Callie’s mind went blank as if it had exploded. She instinctively pushed against his chest. “What?”
Their bodies had nearly brushed against one another. Nelson bent down and tied the strap of her shoe around her ankle.
The touch was gentle. Callie’s heart raced, a wave of relief washing over her—though it was accompanied by a fleeting, barely noticeable sense of loss. “…Thank you.”
Still, she thanked him.
Nelson sighed softly. He removed his glasses, lightly tapping his finger on her knuckles in a casual rhythm. “It’s red.”
Callie glanced down. Wearing high heels for too long had left her heel chafed—something she thought was perfectly normal.
What she didn’t know was how that small patch of redness appeared in Nelson’s eyes, like a spark igniting a dangerous desire, coiling like a venomous snake poised to strike.
But he did nothing. Instead, he reached for the front seat and pulled out a couple of band-aids, tearing them open with deliberate precision.
