As he skimmed through the pages, Callie slowly stirred her coffee with a spoon, letting out a sigh. “It’s not easy to make it to a managerial position at his age. Why would Mr. Hughes take such a risk? Embezzling employees’ wages, lying and cheating—those are crimes.”
The stack of papers in front of them detailed Rowland Hughes’ transgressions. During his tenure as a manager, he had consistently withheld employees’ wages. He was clever about it, choosing only a few employees each month and forging fake payroll slips to pocket the money for himself.
Rowland Hughes’ eyes turned bloodshot as he clenched the papers in his hands. “This is slander! I can sue you for this!” he shouted.
Without hesitation, he tore the documents in half, then threw them on the floor and stomped on them. “Callie, have you lost your mind? Do you even know what you’re doing?”
He was incredulous. With the level of cover-up he had in place, there was no way this could have been exposed. How could Callie know?
