Tyler hadn’t meant to say anything, but since she’d asked so directly, he couldn’t really dodge it. “You don’t want to sell out your best friend, so that leaves me with no choice...”

Samantha knew exactly what he was thinking, but she couldn’t let him do that.
“No matter what, you can't take the fall for this,” she said, frustrated and anxious.
Tyler replied in a low voice, “If I don’t, then Ms. Hughes will never let you off the hook.”
“I’ll figure something out,” Samantha said, unsure even why she was so confident. She just knew she absolutely didn’t want Tyler to be the scapegoat. She’d rather admit guilt herself.
“What can you even do?” he asked.
She hadn’t expected him to come out with it so bluntly. That set her off. “You really are the dumbest person I’ve ever met!” she shouted, then turned and bolted.
“Sam...” Tyler muttered, caught off guard by how angry she got. He hadn’t meant to upset her.
