"Mom, can we please not talk about her?" Fiona really didn't want to hear a single word about Elaine.
Back when Elaine was around, she was always just the shadow, the sidekick. Only once Elaine disappeared for good did Fiona feel like she finally had a shot at standing in the spotlight herself.
"You better make me proud, you hear me?" Lydia said earnestly, her voice lined with expectation.
Fiona replied with total confidence, "Don't worry, Mom. I got this."
On the first day of reporting in, Oliver stayed behind at the school while Elaine, feeling in great spirits, headed back with Marcus.
That first face-off with Lydia after her "death" felt like a perfect wrap-up to a long overdue drama. Of course, it had everything to do with Marcus and Oliver's cooperation—without their help, she wouldn't have pulled it off so cleanly.
"Marcus, thanks a ton for backing me up like that," Elaine said sincerely, her eyes full of gratitude.
