The world was a blur of green and brown as we tumbled down, the rush of wind in my ears drowning out all sound, all thought. Darren’s arms were tight around me as we hurtled toward the ground, and I hardly even had time to get a glimpse of his face before…

All of the breath was knocked out of my lungs as we hit the prickly branches of a pine tree. Darren’s body absorbed most of the fall, the crack of branches beneath us breaking what could have been a fatal drop. I gasped, pain lancing through my entire body as we came to a chaotic stop in a tangle of limbs and pine needles.

“Darren?” My voice cracked as I pushed myself up, ignoring the sharp ache in my ribs. “Darren, are you—”
