Cassandra gripped her fork tightly, head down, looking all timid and quiet.
"Quit shouting—you’re scaring her," Alexander shot his son a fierce glare. His granddaughter had just started acting normal again, and he wasn’t about to let her get spooked back into that strange state. His voice was sharp. "I’ve said it before. Cassie’s not going back to senior year. School’s starting soon—she’s going with Vera to Lexford. End of discussion."
"Dad, if I don’t even have a say as her father, then I’m done trying," Richard slammed his knife and fork on the table and stormed out, grabbing his briefcase, face dark with anger.
Lillian quickly followed him out.
"I almost wish she’d go back to the way she was. Ever since that damn car accident, this house has been a mess, no peace at all," Evelyn huffed, threw Cassandra an angry look, then walked off without touching her breakfast.
