"If I really stabbed him, then I don’t deserve to live."
Sophie Larkspur’s hands trembled as she swore, her voice hoarse. The lawyer who came to verify her account frowned.
"If it wasn’t you, then who else could it be?"
"How would I know?" Sophie looked drained—like she'd aged ten years overnight. There were even white strands visible in her hair now. "I saw Mr. Shaw fall and I was scared out of my mind. I heard footsteps and bolted straight into the wine cellar. My daughter-in-law showed up right after, didn’t she?"
"Footsteps?" The lawyer caught something off. "That doesn’t line up. There’s still a gap between when you say you hid and when your daughter-in-law got there."
