As she hung up, the sound of a door creaking open came from behind her.
The old house still held onto its charm. Even after a few renovations, most of the vintage doors and windows were only reinforced, not replaced. So every time someone used them, they made this familiar creaky, clunky sound—like time itself sighing.
Celeste Harper turned to see Sebastian Wexler walking in. His slightly curled, chestnut-brown hair was a bit messy, and he looked half-awake, a trace of exhaustion still lingering in his eyes.
"Did I wake you up?" she asked, stashing her phone with a slightly guilty smile.
"No, I slept pretty well. It was Mrs. Lacey's cooking that got me up," he said, rubbing his eyes.
Celeste chuckled at that.
"Guess her cooking really left an impression, huh? Lily couldn’t stop thinking about it all afternoon
