"Why were you coming down from upstairs just now?" Fiona Barrington narrowed her eyes suspiciously, clearly not buying it.
"I walked Clara upstairs. This place has several exits—you didn’t really think there’s just one, did you?" Ethan Blackwood replied coolly, tone flat as ever.
Fiona froze for a second. “…"
That one sentence made her feel like she was the clown of her own show. The awkwardness hit her like a slap, and she looked completely thrown off.
Ethan didn’t seem interested in chit-chatting with her either. He kept a polite but definite distance.
"So the butler said you’ve been waiting for more than an hour?" he asked, voice calm to the point of indifference. "What do you want?"
Fiona felt a stab of embarrassment at the way he talked to her.
Every word felt like a wall he was building between them, and when she met his gaze again, a flicker of panic rose in her chest.
